Traditional rain gauges with measurement scale: These are designed to either fix to a pole or be placed at ground level. Rain measurements can be taken regularly and the unit emptied.
Digital rain gauges are design to measure rainfall using an outdoor sensor that is self-emptying. The rainfall information is transmitted wirelessly to a digital base station where the rainfall can be viewed. Some will store historical data over long periods.
Full digital weather stations with rain gauges will also show other weather information such as temperature and humidity. These units often record and store the rainfall data for downloading to a PC for detailed analysis.
